17 April 2010 was a date that I eagerly looked forward to, because it marked the first video game concert in Malaysia. Hoorah, no more needing to go down to Singapore for game concerts! I was so excited I planned my outfit a few days in advance (yah, srsly).

Significant Other and I bought ourselves the RM153 tickets, which we thought would place us somewhere in the middle. Well, we ended up waaaay at the back of the bottom floor, with the level above us as our roof. Which wouldn’t have been so bad if we weren’t seated at the row right at the very back, with quite a number of empty seats, and unenthusiastic fellow concert-goers. Many times during the concert I wanted to join the rest of the crowd and scream out loud, but I’d wind up clapping enthusiastically, then look around and find no one else seated nearby even clapping, and, well, that totally killed the mood. Lesson learnt: next time buy more expensive seats, dammit. VGL was totally worth the ticket price anyway!

VGL was very different for the other game concerts that I have attended so far (Play! and FF: Distant Worlds). For starters, it was more interactive, with a pre-event cosplay & Guitar Hero contest. They invited an audience member to come up and play Space Invaders on screen, with prizes to be won (sadly, the kid they invited didn’t seem to have touched the game before… so he lost). The winner of the Guitar Hero pre-event contest got to play Guitar Hero onstage with Tommy Tallarico, the host (he didn’t win either…but the audience goaded him into playing expert instead of hard, and he has to be commended for being such a good sport. And he was THIS close to winning!).

The concert itself felt more like a rock concert than an orchestral one. True, Play! and FF: Distant Worlds had its fair share of screaming fans, but the host, Tommy Tallarico, had an amazing stage presence, and he managed to bring out an incredible amount of energy from the audience. It was not just about enjoying the music, but also the experience of the concert. And what an experience it was!

Of course, the music was fantastic as well. The orchestra was top notch, and the selection of songs were good. The Metal Gear Solid theme is a personal favourite, so I loved it, and I was deliriously happy when I heard that the audience picked out music from Shadow of the Colossus to be played in this particular concert. The game holds a special place in my heart despite me not having the courage to finish it (I managed to get to the first monster to shoot out beams at me before I faltered and hid in a corner somewhere. Made for dragon slaying, I am not. But who knows, maybe one day I’ll muster up the courage to finish the game). I was also pleased that they did a rock version of One-Winged Angel, as I had already heard a few orchestral versions of that song (and TBH, I’m always disappointed because they never live up to the menace in the MIDI version. Well, for me, at least). And last but not least, the 2nd encore, when they played Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross, was a fantastic way to end the concert.

Significant Other and I didn’t stay for the meet and greet session, because there were so many people, so unfortunately I can’t comment on that. What I can say is that one week later, I’m still giddy from attending the concert, and I really hope that they’ll come back to this country again. I’ll definitely go, and this time I’ll get the more expensive tickets!

It all started when I saw this innocuous post on madhatter’s Twitter last night: Wow young Edgey-poo was prettier than he already is. Can’t say the same abt his fashion sense tho.”. WAITAMINUTE HOLD IT RIGHT THERE (We’ve had this argument before actually), there is nothing wrong with the way Mr. Frilly Prosecutor dresses!

So I retorted with “HEY. HE HAS GOOD TASTE KAY?!”

It soon spiraled down into the Twitter bitchfight below (our condolences to anyone who happened to be following the two of us):

madhatter: LOL DEFINE ‘GOOD”
whiterabbit:
BETTER THAN FEENY’S PINK SWEATER XD
madhatter:
BUT IT WAS A SWEATER MADE OUT OF LOVE (yeah right). Can’t blame a dude in love kay?
whiterabbit:
It was still bad taste XDD
madhatter:
IN FENNY’S DEFENSE, HE WAS NOT A DA YET THEN XDDD
whiterabbit:
At least it’s not a P on a red heart on a pink sweater XDDD
madhatter:
A-at least it’s not frilly XDDD
madhatter:
let’s not forget that he’s having utterly gross flu at that time too XDDD BUT HE GOT BETTER WHEN HE’S OLDEr KAY?
whiterabbit: Ok, but Edgeworth is still the better dresser XD
madhatter:
ERRRR… YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY. ( good gawd, pink and frills whuttt )
whiterabbit:
The only one who lacks fashion sense here is Feeny XDDD (what pink frills? @.@ Aren’t they white?)
whiterabbit:
OH read that wrongly lololol. It’s not pink silly it’s MAROON
madhatter:
OH PLEASE. It’s more to the shade of pink than maroon stop deluding yourself. FEENY HAS RESPECTABLE BLUE SUITS
whiterabbit:
You’re colourblind XD Also, blue is BORING XD
madhatter:
AT LEAST BLUE IS NOT EYEBALLS SEARING XDDD
whiterabbit:
MAROON AIN’T EYEBALL SEARING XD

And then, because we are both graphic designers, colour chartsĀ  got dragged into the fight.

madhatter: IT’S LIKE, BRIGHT PINK OKAY? MAROON IS DEF. NOT LIKE THAT IN MY CMYK/RGB CHART XDDDD
whiterabbit:
OH YEAH? Well, I’ve got news for you buddy. Your CMYK/RGB chart is BROKEN
madhatter:
PLZ TO BE CHECKING YOUR MONITOR CALIBRATION. MY PANTONE CHART HERE PROVES YOURS NEEDS FIXING.
whiterabbit:
Your Pantone chart must be a FEW YEARS OLD THEN, THE COLOURS ARE OFF ALREADY XDD
madhatter:
well, as off as the colours on the chart is, IT’S STILL BETTER THAN YOUR CORNEA, pal!
whiterabbit:
Well, my cornea is still in better condition than your taste, pal! XD

In any case, since this is my blog…Mr. Frilly Prosecutor wins! XD

I meant to write this right after I came back last week. And then a week passed by… oops :p

Anyway, last Saturday I flew down to Singapore with some really great people to catch the Asian premiere of Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds. Since madhatter has already written a good post about it, for a better description of the concert I would refer to this.

In short I would say that this concert was much better than PLAY, which I attended two years back. And of course it was made a million times more awesome by Nobuo Uematsu’s appearance (although being the complete blurcase I am, I had trouble spotting him even after two people pointed out exactly where in the hall he was sitting. And of course I also missed the brief moment when they shined the spotlight on where he was sitting -_-).

Some of the pieces they played were so good I forgot I hated the game it came from (I’m looking at you, FFVIII). Some I didn’t recognize since I’ve only played FFVII onwards on the PS & PS2, and the remake of FFIII and FFIV (which I have yet to finish, because everyone keeps dying and I just found that really depressing -_-) on the Nintendo DS. I enjoyed them anyway :D

The concert was also really awesome because it was filled with rabid Final Fantasy fans who screamed their lungs out every time a song finished playing, and especially when they announced the encore songs (which were really, REALLY fantastic!). I swear half of them must be Malaysian too, judging from what I heard from a friend who attended the Q&A session, who said that a lot of people screamed when they said they were in talks to bring the concert to Malaysia. I sincerely hope that they will because that will be SO TOTALLY AWESOME XD

I missed the Q&A session to line up for a chance to get Nobuo Uematsu’s signature but sadly I did not manage to get it as they cut the line off shortly before it would reach our turns T_T The concert organizers didn’t allow anyone to take photos of him either T_T But at least I got to see him up close, because he passed by the line after he was done with the signing… which was how I knew we weren’t going to be getting his signature lol. Oh well :/

For quite a while now I had been getting invites to the Elven Blood app on Facebook. Just another game, I had thought at that time, I’m probably not going to play it for long, and I don’t need to add yet another game to my already long list of apps. Then a friend sent me an invite pleading with me to join his party, so I finally relented and added it. Since I added the game, I decided that maybe I should just give it a chance and try it out. My colleague at work was also raving about the game, so I thought why not.

Big mistake.

When I first tried the game out, I thought it was ok. Something for me to just play on a casual basis, and nothing more. Less than two weeks later I have been reduced to a quivering mass that adds strangers into my Facebook just so I can advance into the deeper levels which require a bigger party size. You see, the evil, evil thing about Elven Blood is that the deeper, more advanced areas require a bigger party, comprising your friends, or some NPCs here and there that gives you a +1 member to your party. To get to the end of the game, you will require fifty. Just how on earth was I supposed to stuff my party full of fifty friends who play Elven Blood? No wonder everyone was sending me those invites.

At first I thought I could do with just sending out invites to my friends and getting some fairies for the exchange (fairies give you a +1 to party size). But a few days later, I saw how unviable it was, and finally caved in.

I swear, whoever created this game (and those of its ilk) are spawns of Satan. Damn youuuuuuuu~!

UPDATE: Since I have now progressed further in-game, I have realized that what I wrote about needing fifty party members to proceed to the end of the game is not true. It seems that the walkthrough I consulted was incomplete, as I now have areas requiring sixty-five party members and the end of the game still seems nowhere in sight.

Oh well, at least I am consoled by the fact that if I ever do get bored on Facebook, I have a lot of strangers’ profiles to browse through :p

*** WARNING, MINOR FINAL FANTASY: CRISIS CORE SPOILERS***

Poor Zack. He’s bawling his eyes out in Aerith’s church, devastated about his situation, and all Aerith does is to ask him about her flowers. And about making her a flower wagon. Wtf is wrong with you, woman? XD

An email from Play Asia just arrived in my mailbox informing me that my order of Crisis Core and The World Ends with You has just shipped. Yes, I bought two games at once even though I’m a little cash-strapped at the moment. And with Mass Effect for the PC just around the corner, and MGS4 ALSO just around the corner (and I don’t own a PS3…yet), as well as still wanting to buy an ori copy of Revenant Wings, I’m contemplating on how I can juggle my budget for the next few months, considering that I am soon-to-be-unemployed.

Hmm, maybe I’ll just buy all anyway and die happy.

A link from madhatter. I swear, I haven’t laughed so hard at a comic for…. months now, I think. The person responsible has made some hilarious Ace Attorney comics too, which I won’t post here because they are spoileriffic. Check them out on his/her LiveJournal here.

Significant Other: You know, I was just thinking of what name generational names we could use for our kids next time. Maybe “Zhen”?
Me: What does that mean? :/
Significant Other: Solid. But, well, don’t know what to really name him yet…
Me: *lightbulb lights up in head* Ooooh oooh I know I know!
Significant Other: What?
Me: SOLID SNAKE! :D
Significant Other: What??!?! No!
Me: Bu but why not? :(
Significant Other: Chinese people don’t like snakes leh!
Me: Bu but it’d be cool :( …in a very geeky way, anyway.
Significant Other: NO.
Me: Awww :( Hmm, if you use “Snake” as the generational word, then we could do Solid Snake, Liquid Snake…
Significant Other: …
Me: :D

Meet Cid from FF4 for the Nintendo DS.

ff4_cid-resized.jpg

He came in a FF4 Trading Arts box madhatter & I pooled with her friend over Play Asia. My first reaction to him was WTF, he looks like someone’s crazy uncle lolololol. So I decided to take a bit of free time to do a quick photoshop of how he fits in with the rest of the family:

I am now contemplating if I should plonk down the money and get Judge Master Grabranth. Because if I can’t get Basch, I can at least get my hands on his equally hot, though somewhat psychotic evil twin brother.
