Yeah yeah, I know this is old news, but Munira’s post about Twilight reminded me that I’ve been meaning to post about this for ages but kept putting it off. So here’s my (anti?) Twilight rant.

I first heard about Twilight from madhatter, a vampire literature fan who despised the book. But why? I asked. “Well, it is totally horrible,” was the response I got. “How people can even worship such horrendous writing is beyond me. I tried to read it, but I gave up halfway.” Well, it can’t possibly be THAT bad right? I asked back. So she introduced me to Twilight, a series about forbidden human-vampire love. Did I mention the sparkling vampires?

I got curious enough to want to read it for myself. But since I refused to pay for a book I probaby wouldn’t like, madhatter passed me the link to this blog, which I like because she writes totally snarky comments about the writing, sometimes line by line. Sadly, she doesn’t update often, so I often found myself cracking up at her entries and then wanting to read more of the book but not being able to. That and I did want to give the book a chance. What if the reason I laughed at it so much was because I had been introduced to it by reading a snarky review of the book? Fortunately, I had a friend who had the book (he did NOT buy it, however – he was much chargrined to receive the book from a well-meaning friend), and he loaned it to me – after he was done reading it, anyway. He found it just as amusing as I did. Also, it helped with his insomnia.

So, book in hand, I settled down to read it. I finished it in three days, which was no mean feat as many of my friends who tried reading the book couldn’t even bring themselves to read past the first chapter. I experienced many WTF moments, but when Bella gushed, “Oh Eddie-poo, how much more wonderful can you be than your already wonderful self?”, I had to stop reading the book for the day because my brain just sputtered and died.

I can now say with final certainity that I think the book is HORRIBLE. Twilight has since turned into a very long running joke between me & some friends who also love to poke fun at the book. There are, of course, many other people who have no idea why we seem to love doing it. Well, the answer is IT IS SO TOTALLY FUN TO SNARK TWILIGHT. Yup, I’m a Twilight lolfan.

The only good thing I really have to say about Twilight is that the book covers are absolutely gorgeous. And I adore the font that they used for the book titles.

Still, reading “the trees, their trunks covered with moss, their branches hanging with a canopy of it” and “the air filtered down greenly through the leaves” crack me up every time.
